People have really indicated that this Evolution Excel model was worth every penny that they have spent on it.

The Septic System of Your Kitchen Room

Urban areas in many countries do not have a public sewer system. Here people depend on individual septic tanks to handle waste from their bathrooms, toilets, and kitchens.

The 2011 Indian census showed that 30 million urban households (38 percent of all homes in towns and cities) have septic tanks. By 2019, estimates say this will rise to about 148 million homes. In North America, approximately 25 percent of the population relies on septic tanks.

It is vital to know how a septic tank works in order to choose the top rated garbage disposal. A septic tank system usually consists of two chambers. Waste and water enter the first chamber of the tank where solids settle on the bottom.

Scum such as oil and grease float to the top. The settled solids are decomposed using bacteria. The remaining liquid flows into the second chamber, where more settlement and treatment happens. This cleaner waste liquid flows into a septic drain field. Here soil and gravel filter out any remaining waste.

This cleaner waste liquid flows into a septic drain field. Here soil and gravel filter out any remaining waste. You must pump out the solids from a septic tank now and then. An electric garbage disposal works by shredding food waste and mixing it with water. It then passed through pipes into a septic tank or in some cases directly into a city’s main sewage system.

Before buying the quietest garbage disposal, it is vital to know if your septic tank is big enough to handle the increased volume of wastewater the unit will produce. It is worth asking a building inspector or other qualified person. In general, if a home’s septic tank already deals with a washing machine or dishwasher as well as the toilets and sinks then it is more likely to be able to handle a garbage disposal.

Always check if local authorities allow you to install a garbage disposal if your home connects to a public sewage system. You might need to get a permit.

The Benefits of A Garbage Disposal

Why choose a home garbage disposal or ultra quiet garbage disposal over a trash can to get rid of food waste?

Better Health

Most people think of the toilet as the most contaminated part of the house. In fact, a kitchen sink contains 100,000 times more germs than a bathroom or lavatory. The kitchen creates more bacteria than any other room in the home. These germs can spread through a household like wildfire.

One single bacteria cell can become more than 8 million cells in less than 24 hours! As few as 10 bacteria can make people sick.

Instead of hanging around in the kitchen trash can, on the street attracting flies or even stuck in the sink pipes a food waste disposer grinds up the waste and flushes it away in a matter of seconds.

Environmentally Friendly

Food scraps make up to 25% of household trash. This normally ends up rotting in landfills creating methane gas, a greenhouse gas harmful to the earth’s atmosphere.

A garbage disposal reduces landfills by grinding up food waste so that it can pass into septic tanks or through the normal sewer system to wastewater plants. Here, it turns into fertilizers.

Food waste disposers make a very important contribution to the environment and most people are unaware of what a wise and sustainable choice they are making when they put their food ‘down the drain’’’, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers.

A Clean Kitchen

After cooking the family meal, most people’s kitchens are a mess. Cleaning up is quicker and easier when you can put leftover food straight into a garbage disposal. Just turn on the disposal unit and cold-water tap and away it goes! This also prevents smells.

Simple to Use

Modern garbage disposals are very easy to use. Just flick a switch near the sink to turn them on and off. They are also quiet and simple to clean. Installing garbage disposals is also easy if you have good plumbing and the right septic tank.

Top Features of Food Waste Disposer

Before going to buy garbage disposal or looking at prices, it is important to consider the features of garbage disposals. Here is a list of the most important things you should look for in deciding what is the best cheap garbage disposal.

Auto Reverse Function

This is also known as anti-jamming. It helps reduce the number of times hard materials or sticky waste becomes stuck in the grinder. The auto-reverse system will automatically make the unit go into reverse when it detects a blockage. This increases the torque, or power, and can break even the toughest of jams. This is manual in older garbage disposals. Some garbage disposals also have a ‘’jaminator’’ feature which means the impellers move back and forth (or oscillate) as the unit grinds to help prevent blockages.

Horsepower Ratings

The amount of waste a garbage disposal can handle depends upon the power of its motor. Units usually come in one of four power sizes:

1 and above Horsepower Garbage Disposal

This is the most powerful motor used in garbage disposals. It offers the most grinding capacity and speed. It will grind hard waste, such as bones and hard vegetable matter (e.g. corn and carrots), more finely and quicker than smaller motors. This size unit is best for bigger families.

3/4 HP Garbage Disposal

This offers slightly less grinding power and capacity but can cope with the food waste of 4-6 member families.

1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

This garbage disposal can grind soft waste but not hard waste such as chicken bones. Any hard waste will jam in the unit. It is most suitable for one or two person households.

1/3 HP Garbage Disposal

This is the smallest motor available on the more basic garbage disposals. It is suitable only for soft foods such as vegetables. These models can jam quite frequently and have only a limited use.

Stainless Steel Grinding Chamber

The grinding chamber shreds the waste before it goes into the drain. Inside the chamber are impellers mounted on a spinning plate. These spinning lugs force food waste against a stationary grind ring, thus tearing them into small pieces. The garbage disposals have stainless steel components in their grinding chambers, as well as the chamber itself. This means the chambers are resistant to rust, are easier to clean and last longer.

Quick Neck Mounting

This feature allows the buyer to connect the garbage disposal into the sink simply and quickly. The owner can do this himself with the light, lower horse-powered units. One horsepower and above garbage disposals are heavier, between 15 and 30 pounds, and will need two people to install.

Electric Cord

When buying a garbage disposal check whether it come with an electric power cord. Such units plug straight into an electrical outlet.

The average warranty on a garbage disposal can be between 1 and 7 years. Some manufacturers offer up to ten years. Others offer lifetime free in-home mechanical replacement and labour warranties. The more comprehensive and longer a warranty is, the more confidence the manufacturer has in the product.

Different Types of Garbage Disposals

Garbage disposal units come in one of two types: Continuous feed models and Batch feed models. The continuous feed models allow you to keep on adding food waste while the unit is running. Batch feed models require you to put the waste in the disposal, cover the opening with a stopper and then turn it on.

Batch feed and continuous feed garbage disposals grind and dispose of waste equally well. Both are just as efficient and available with the same horsepower and with the same types of grinding chambers. However, there are advantages and disadvantages to both types. This guide should help you determine which is best for you.

Continuous Feed Garbage Disposals 2019

  • Continuous feed garbage disposals are the easiest to use, making them the most popular type of garbage disposal units. You put food waste in the sink and turn the unit on with a flick of the switch.
  • Once the garbage disposal is on you can simply keep adding waste. This means a quicker cleaning the kitchen is faster, especially if you have a lot of waste.
  • Continuous feed models need a minimal amount of maintenance and cleaning them is easy.
  • Modern models have multiple grinding chambers, which greatly reduces the number of jams.
  • These garbage disposals are generally cheaper than batch feed models.

  • Users put waste into an always-open filler neck in continuous feed models. This means there is always a risk that bits of waste may shoot out or objects such as spoons fall in while the unit is running. This latter can seriously damage a waste garbage disposal. Look out for brands that come with a splash guard to stop this from happening.
  • An open neck also means homes with small children need to make sure no little hands are stuck into the disposal’s opening.
  • Not all continuous feed models come with a power cord. You may have to buy one separately or pay to have the unit hardwired into the kitchen.

Batch Feed Garbage Disposals 2019

  • Batch feed models are safer than continuous models. Once owners put the waste in, they must put a cover over the garbage disposal’s opening. This stopper triggers the switch to turn the unit on.
  • It stops small children from putting their hands in the garbage disposal while it is grinding.
  • It also stops objects such as cutlery from accidentally falling in and destroying the grinder mechanism.
  • Nearly all batch feed models come with a power cord. This means easy installation, which most homeowners can do themselves.
  • There is no need for costly professional plumbers.

  • Filling the disposal unit first and then putting in the stopper to turn it on means the batch model is slower and less convenient. This is especially so if you have a lot of food waste.
  • The disposal unit shreds garbage bit by bit.
  • There is a temptation to wait until a batch feed garbage disposal is full of waste before turning it on.
  • This can create health hazards with rotting food breeding bacteria and attracting insects.

10 Things You Should Know Before Choosing a Garbage Disposal?

Deciding what is the best waste disposal can be difficult. It is not just about price. After all, the most expensive do not always mean the best and a cheap garbage disposal might be perfect for your home. Factors to look at include how often owners will use it and the size of families.

Below is a list of essential things to look at before making your purchase of the top garbage disposal unit.

Power and Capacity

A good garbage disposal will handle normal kitchen waste without any problems. However, the amount and type of waste you need to get rid of will determine what size garbage disposal is best for you.

The fewer the number of people in the home, the smaller and cheaper the garbage disposal needed. An apartment with two people will only need a 1/2 Horsepower (HP) or even a 1/3 HP unit if it is not used very often. A unit such as the Waste King 9930 Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposer can easily cope with large amounts of food left on plates.

Garbage disposal makers recommended a bigger size for family homes where members use the garbage disposal a lot. Units such the InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist 3/4 HP Household Garbage Disposer or the Waste King Legend Series 3/4 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposer – (L-3300) can both handle more and tougher waste such as chicken bones. They jam less and are stronger, so if items such as cutlery are accidentally dropped into them, they are less likely to break.

For bigger homes with large families of more than four people, a 1 HP garbage disposal is best.

Units such as the InSinkErator Evolution Excel 1.0 HP Household food waste disposer or the Waste King 9980 Legend Series 1 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposer can easily cope with frequent use and the toughest food waste.

Batch Feed vs Continuous Feed

Continuous feed garbage disposals are the most popular. They save time and are easier to use. Two of the best examples of these are the Waste King Legend Series 1.0-Horsepower Continuous-Feed Garbage Disposal (L-8000) and the Waste King Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposal – (L-2600). You put waste into the sink, and it starts grinding. If convenience is what you want, then a continuous feed garbage disposal is right for you.

Batch feed garbage disposers, on the other hand, are safer. The cover over the grinder entrance hole reduces the chance of injury and breakdown through cutlery and other items accidently falling in.

Some of the safest on the market include the Waste King 9900TC Legend Series 3/4 HP Batch Feed Operation Garbage Disposer and the Waste King L-5000TC Legend Series 3/4 HP Batch Feed Operation Garbage Disposer.

The Grinding Stage

To be effective a garbage disposal unit must grind up waste small enough so it does not block sewage pipes or harm septic tanks. Different brands and models of the garbage disposal units have different numbers of grinding stages. Garbage disposal manufacturers generally offer one to three grinding stages in their units.

The most common and cheapest garbage disposals use just one stage during the grinding process. This can limit the unit’s ability to grind waste into small bits and the type of waste it can handle. A lot of water is also necessary to flush the waste through sewage pipes. However, systems such as the Waste King A1SPC Knight 1.0 Horsepower Garbage Disposal highlight the fact they only have one stage. Waste King claim no multi-stage chambers are needed and the toughest waste is pulverised in one go.

Stage two grinders do the same job as stage one units but then further liquefy the waste in the second stage. This helps prevent any blockages. Two stage units such as the InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist 3/4 HP Household Garbage Disposer and the InSinkErator Evolution Essential 3/4 HP Household Garbage Disposer can handle tougher waste and use less water.

Garbage disposals with three stage grinders such as the InSinkErator Evolution Excel 1.0 HP Household Garbage Disposer break down waste even further and can handle some of the toughest food waste there is. These units will do both stages 1 and 2 and then further reduce the liquefied waste. Manufacturers of 3 stage models claim they will even cut grains of rice into smaller pieces.

Noise and Vibration

The waste disposal units on the market today make much less noise and vibrations than before. There are two main causes of noise and vibration. The main one is the connection between the unit and the kitchen countertop or sink. The second is the unit itself.

The best food disposals reduce noise by having good mounting systems, which minimize the vibration from the unit to the sink.

As well as the mounting, insulation on the unit is also key to reducing noise. Features to look out for include insulation around moving parts, anti-vibration tailpipes or sink mounts and sink baffles. The Waste King A1SPC Knight 1.0 Horsepower Garbage Disposal uses the same material as soundproof music studios.

Features such as a nylon, insulated grinding chamber, like those produced by WasteKing, mean a quieter garbage disposal. Alternatively, the InSinkErator Evolution Excel series and the InSinkErator Evolution Essential 3/4 HP Household Garbage Disposer have ‘’Sound Seal’’ technology which makes puts them amongst the quietest garbage disposals on the market.

If you have an excessively noisy unit, it is probably because the garbage disposal is not working due to worn out parts or damage through misuse.

The Mounting

The mounting connects a garbage disposal system to a sink or kitchen counter. Manufacturers use slightly different mounting types. They should be easy and quick to install.

InSinkErator and Waste King offer two of the best mounting types.

InSinkErator’s Quick-Lock mounting system comes with all its latest ‘’Evolution Series’’ models and also fits its ‘’Badger series’’ models. The mounting is made of stainless steel and as its name suggest is easy to fit new or to replace a garbage disposal.

Waste King has two type of garbage disposal mounting systems.

One is the 3 bolt mounting system with stainless components, which the last longer. The Waste King 9930 Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposer has these features.

The second is the EZ mount system made of plastic and aluminium.

The Waste King Legend Series 3/4 HP Continuous Feed Operation Garbage Disposer – (L-3200) uses this and has the advantage of including an easy to clean removable splash guard. The 3 bolt system does not have a splash guard.

The garbage disposals are the ones that last a long time. These units have rust proof stainless steel grinding chambers and components. The InSinkErator Evolution Excel 1.0 HP Household Garbage Disposer has a 40 oz. Stainless steel grinds chamber with three grind stages and an automatic jam sensor.

Anti-jamming and automatic reverse systems are also very important in ensuring the garbage disposals stand the test of time. The InSinkErator Evolution Excel 1.0 HP Household Garbage Disposer system detects jams and automatically puts the grinders in reverse to unblock the unit without the user having to do anything.

The top garbage disposals come with a clear instruction manual and all the parts needed to install it. Ideally a buyer should be able to install it himself or with the minimum of help. Hiring a professional plumber can be expensive.

Best Size of A Garbage Disposal

Before buying a garbage waste disposal, you need to know if it will fit in your kitchen. Measure the space under the sink before making a decision. A garbage disposal’s size is determined in most cases by its power. Smaller units have smaller motors and bigger sized disposals have big motors. There are a few exceptions, but if you want a powerful garbage disposal, you might have to enlarge the space under your kitchen sink.

Install Garbage Disposal in Your Kitchen Room

While you do need some knowledge of plumbing and electrical in order to install a garbage disposal, it is a pretty simple task when it is laid out as shown below. If you are uncomfortable doing this, definitely contact a handyman you have worked with in the past, or maybe you have a family member will to give you a hand that has installed a garbage disposal before. Ensure that you have a working, dedicated 120V 20 Amp outlet located close to the garbage disposal unit underneath the sink. Without this, you will not have a functioning garbage disposal, so please verify before proceeding with the installation.

Disable the to power to the outlet dedicated to your garbage disposal prior to installation by turning off the circuit breaker in your service panel or removing the fuse.

Obviously, if you have an existing garbage disposal, this will need to be removed prior to installing the new one. More info on this process can be found on this page, Garbage Disposal Removal.

Garbage Disposal Sink Flange and Mounting Ring Installation

First, we need to work with the flange and mounting ring. The flange sits on top of the sink, while the mounting ring is underneath. This combination is what holds up your garbage disposal.

  • In order to make sure we have a leak-free installation, seal the sink with plumbers putty available at your local hardware store, roughly a half inch thick.
  • Firmly press the new sink flange into the opening.
  • This is where it is helpful to have an extra set of hands, have someone hold the sink flange in place while you are under the sink working on sliding the gasket and triangular attachment onto the sink flange. It can be done by a single person, but no need to struggle if you have access to another set of hands.
  • There is a spring clip or snap ring which fastens the sink flange to the mounting ring, clip that into the recess in the sink flange.
  • The mounting ring has a set of three screws, tighten evenly each one a bit at a time until there is even pressure from all screws on the sink bottom.
  • You should see some excess plumbers putty on your sink bottom from the applied pressure via the mounting rings tightening; you can wipe this off with a cloth.

Power Installation

Prior to attaching the garbage disposal to the mounting ring, we need to attach the power cord.

  • There is a small electrical plate on the bottom of your garbage disposal, remove the plate with a screwdriver and attach wires to the corresponding color with wire nuts (White to white, black to black, green to green).
  • Tuck the wires back into the compartment and refasten the cover plate.

Dishwasher Connection (Optional)

I know in my case, and many others I am sure, the dishwasher runs through the garbage disposal, so we need to tackle this. If you do not run your dishware drain line through your garbage disposal or do not even have a dishwasher, this step can be omitted.

  • Locate the small drain tube located near the top of your garbage disposal.
  • Use a screwdriver and a hammer to get rid of the knockout plate covering this pipe.
  • Take the knockout plate out of the food disposal unit.

Garbage Disposal Mounting

Now we get to the “heavy lifting” where we mount the garbage disposal to the mounting ring.

  • Line up the garbage disposal with the 3 mounting rings screws.
  • Hold the food disposal in place as you rotate the lower mounting ring until the 3 ears are fastened to the assembly.

Attach Drain Lines

Now that we have our disposer nicely fastened, we need to attach our drain lines.

  • Before we get started, not that all connections here should be very tight, so take your time. No sense in rushing through this phase only to find out you did not properly fasten a gasket and have a leak on your hands.
  • Attach the discharge pipe to the unit via the gasket and screws provided.
  • Turn your garbage disposal until it comes in line with your sink’s drain trap.
  • It is possible you need to extend some connections, all of these materials can be found at your local hardware store, but hopefully, you are all set with your existing configuration though.

Lock Disposal in Place

After you have made sure you fastened your garbage disposal properly and all plumbing connections are tight, it is time to lock the disposal in place.

  • Rotate the cam collar at the top of the garbage disposal unit using a screwdriver or a supplied wrench provided in the packaging to lock the disposal in place.

Testing 1,2,3…

Now we make sure our work is finished by looking for leaks and testing the unit does, in fact, work like a garbage disposal.

  • Start running some water and get under the sink to look for leaks.
  • Hopefully, you heeded my advice and took your time on your connections and have no leaks! If you do, turn off the water, tighten the connections and give it another go.
  • No leaks, turn the power to the unit back on in your circuit breaker box.
  • Run some water and test that your garbage disposal works.
  • You should be all set, grab a beer and admire your handyman skills after your first successful garbage disposal installation!

Some Basic Knowledge about Garbage Disposal Repair

Having trouble with your garbage disposer machine is one of the worst things of your everyday life. There can be various reasons of the damage like water drainage or leakage, some disturbing thing blocking the path of disposing or the flywheel of your disposal machine is not spinning as it is supposed to. Whatever may be the reason, if your garbage disposer is not working then you have to fix it otherwise it will be trouble for you and your overall home environment. So how can you do that? Removing Any Stuck Object

This is the most common cause of damage. A simple object, for example, a chicken bone, is somehow stuck in the disposing area and that is why the wastages are not going down and the machine is not working properly. In this case, you can fix it just with a wooden spoon or a wrench. Usually, you get a wrench in a toolbox when you buy a standard garbage disposal machine. Wondering how exactly you can fix the problem? Well, just find a torch light and locate the object and then use the wrench to remove it. Your disposal machine will work fine as it is used to.

Fixing A Clogged Drain

It is a different situation than the previous one. Here some objects, usually food particles, accumulate in the drainage area of your disposal which ultimately results into a clogging. You can always use a dry cleaner to clean those stuff but if that doesn’t work, you have to make your hands dirty. Make sure that you have a bucket and place it under the drain and put the clog in it. We have also seen that many people use meat slicer for jerky and they put the excess part of the meat to Garbage disposal. This is not a good practice.

Leakage Trouble

Leakage problem is also a common reason of garbage disposal not working properly. Fixing this one is rather easy though. Here you just have to find out the exact point of your leakage. Once you do that you just tighten the seal of that place. Alternatively, it will be better if you buy a new seal and replace the old one to take care of it.

Fixing Your Flywheel

Another situation is the flywheel not working properly. This is also because of some dust particles which get stuck in the blades and the wheel cannot spin properly because of this. Here too you clean those things to fix the problem.

Before you start the fixing remember a few important things. Always read the disposal manual before start working and never forget to turn the power off because it won’t be smart if you work putting the electricity on.
