I am a bit of an information addict. I like nothing better than trawling the web finding out interesting information to amaze my friends. I rubbed my hands with glee when it came time to replace my old waste disposal unit. The hours I could spend researching the best home garbage disposal I could find! However, I was stunned by the masses of information out there. After reading a mountain of garbage disposal reviews, I eventually chose the Waste King Legend 8000 Series 1.0-Horsepower Continuous-Feed Garbage Disposal.
Hopefully, this review will save you the time and bother of a long search if you are looking to buy a garbage disposal. Here is why I decided to buy the Waste King Legend 8000.
First off, I picked a Waste King because of the company’s great reputation. The brand is popular because of the reliability and powerful grinding ability of its top rated garbage disposals. If anything does go wrong, Waste King also offer some of the best warranties around.
The two most important things I want from a garbage disposal unit is power and quietness. I want to be able to shove in my food waste and not worry about whether it will clog up the unit. I also want to be able to talk normally with friends while it does this. The Legend 8000 ticks both boxes.

Best Features of Waste King Legend Series 1.0
First things first, the Waste King Legend 8000 has a one horsepower motor which is pretty big. Household garbage waste disposals motors don’t come any larger than one and a half horsepower. Any bigger and it’s a commercial garbage disposal like they use in restaurants.
The Legend 8000’s one horsepower motor spins the grinders at a top speed of 2800 revs per minute (rpm). I’m no engineer, but I know this is fast and powerful enough to handle any food waste. It is certainly enough to grind up chicken bones and vegetable peels in my home. Waste King claim the motor produces more power per pound than other brands of the same size.
For those who do have a technical mind, the motor is a ‘Vortex’ permanent magnet model. It requires 115 volts, 60 Hertz, and 7.0 current-amps to operate. All in all, the motor is very energy efficient and one of the most powerful on the market.
The next thing the Legend 8000 does very well do not produce much noise. Waste King have wrapped sound insulating material all over the unit. They have made a point of insulating the grinding parts, which often make the most noise on any waste disposal unit. The Legend 8000’s grinding chamber is made of glass-filled nylon. This also keeps the noise down when waste is being pulverized.
The loudest – or should that be the quietest – noise you will hear is coming up through the sink plug hole. As I’ve mentioned, the insulated grinding parts keep this noise to a minimum. With the water running this sound is cancelled out even further.
The Legend 8000 is definitely quiet enough to enjoy a conversation while preparing a meal or cleaning the plates afterward.
With power and noise took care of, the next thing I want is a waste disposal unit that is easy to use. Here again, the Legend 8000 fits the bill. For a start it is a continuous feed model which means once switched on you can just keep putting in waste. The Legend 8000 also has anti-jam swivel impellers that reduce the chances of the unit clogging up. Although do not overdo it - too much tough waste in one go is asking for trouble. A 1 HP motor does have its limitations after all.
With a bit of common sense, however, you can clean up food mess in a flash. The Legend 8000 can also be hooked up to a dishwasher to make life even easier. There is even a waste king legend 8000 splash guard, which is removable for easy cleaning, to stop food waste from splattering onto your clothes.
This splash guard makes the original plug hole opening a little smaller which can be a bit awkward when you are putting food waste in. On the plus side, however, a smaller hole makes it harder for cutlery to fall in.
Should you need to unblock something from the Legend 8000, it has a convenient reset button on the front.
Easy to Fit
The Legend 8000’s ‘easy to use’ design carries on to its installation. The unit has a ‘fast-and-easy’ EZ mount system that comes with a drain elbow and gasket, and all the bits you need to install it yourself.
Although I don’t like to admit it I am not the handiest person to ever use a screwdriver. However, it only took me a couple of hours to install the Legend 8000 under my sink. The instructions were easy to follow, and I didn’t swear in pain once! Once in place under my sink, it was just a matter of plugging in the 36-inch power cord that comes with the Legend 8000.
If you are wondering how to replace a garbage disposal, the Legend 800’s EZ mount system will also easily swap out with most other Waste King models.
The Legend 8000 is just over 14 inches tall and 9 inches wide so should fit under most peoples’ sinks. It weighs a little less than 15 pounds so you should be able to manhandle the unit into position on your own.
To make sure they have ticked all the ‘easy to use’ boxes, Waste King have also designed the Legend 8000 to work with most septic tanks. Just double check whether your septic system can handle a waste disposal unit.
Sturdy and Rust-Free
Now my Waste King Legend 8000 is in place; I should enjoy problem-free grinding thanks to its sturdy design. The unit has heavy cast stainless steel impellers (the things that help pulverize food waste) and stainless steel grinding components throughout. The ‘steel’ bit means none of the components are likely to break under all that grinding power. The ‘stainless’ bit means they should not rust either. The grinding chamber is made of glass-filled nylon which should also prevent corrosion.
The fact that the Legend 8000 parts are specifically made to resist rust is important since they will spend most of the time covered in water.
But what if my Legend 8000 does rust or even breakdown? This brings me onto one of the best things I like about the unit and Waste King in general – the warranty.
The Waste King Legend 8000 comes with a Lifetime In-Home Service Warranty. If the unit has a material or mechanical problem within the lifetime of the buyer, it will be replaced free of charge.
A word of warning though before you go off and stuff anything that comes to hand into the Legend 8000. The warranty is limited. If you use the unit wrongly – say by stuffing in a fork - the warranty is void.
For added peace of mind, the Legend 8000 is also covered by a lifetime warranty against rust and corrosion.
This kind of guarantee from Waste King is one of the longest and best offered by waste disposal manufacturers.
